jerky trackpoint in DOS

I have what might be a fairly oddball combination:
A ThinkPad X24, running Win XP, and on that I run a DOS graphic application, (Ventura 3).
I've been doing this on other machines for years without a glitch.
The problem is, on the ThinkPad the response of the trackpoint mouse is very jerky. It moves smoothly, then freezes for a few seconds, then quickly jumps to the correct position. (In Windows apps it's smooth.)
I plugged in a USB mouse and that was much better.
Are there any compatibility settings or other tweaks that might make the trackpoint better behaved in a DOS window?
