hi, i have been trying to ghost my original hd on my x31. it hasnt worked using acronis. i have now got a new fujitsu 120gb hd and installed it onto the x31 and used the x30/x31 recovery disc that i got of someone from this forum. however after using them (2 disc set copies) i remember the last 2 part code was Fru***96 . it unpacked files installed , and said PRE IBm or something , but however there was no hidden recovery partition, I must state the bios at time was on (Normal predesk). xp was working ok except after install 1 BSOD then booted up fine. then checking C:\ there only appears to be 26gb of hd available, i ran partition magic and it said the hd was bad. Does the factory disc have to be specific witht the hardware it came with. any help in installing the hidden partition on this new hardisk would be great as i am currently using the fujitsu and x31 with fresh xp pro install and no access ibm features. thanks.

Not limited to.

The service partition should be installed with the Product Recovery disks, follow the following instructions:

Instructions for using the Recovery CD

If still no luck then perhaps your hdd could be bad or you received a bad burn of Product Recovery disks from the member.

the hd was new and is currently working in my x31 now with no probs, just that after the initial factory install with the recovery discs, it would only show about 27gb. when installing xp with the recovery options do i need to create a small partition for the hidden partition,or is this suposed toall be done by the recovery disks?, can anyone explain why it shows my c drive to only be 27gb, if the original hd was 40gb. well i will give this another try, this time by setting bios predesk to disable 1st, format the new 120 gb hd using patition magic (ntsf) . also i still have the original 40gb hd with the hidden partition was wondering if i could not just copy that small ibm hidden partiton onto a small created partition on my 120gb hd and then just install xp on the larger partition. many thanks.

HDD capacity is always less and differs from the advertised size by a few GB's. This is due to the different measurements (Base 2) used by HDD manufactures (1000 MB per GB). Your computer uses the correct measurement (1024 MB per GB).

Around 4 GB is conserved by the service partition in thinkpads.

You don't need to create any partition, Product Recovery disks do that automatically. Prior to 2003 1C partition type was used, lenovo changed it to type 12, most new thinkpads now use 0x27 partition type.
