with T61 or should I just get XP? I don't have any programs that I need to run other than word, internet and some games.

If you want less headaches, XP would be good.

If you are doing only what you say, Vista is OK and since it is the coming system, it will get better over time. XP is nice and mature and works well.

Two things about Vista:
1. There are incompatabilities with current software (but you say you aren't using too much, so that should not be a concern).
2. The Vista search (now available in XP and I have it on my T41) is a real PIG and does not find everything. The old standard XP search is a hands down winner at the current time. I have a case open with Microsoft, but I don't know if they will condescend to fix it.

Stick with Vista Business or Ultimate so you can downgrade to XP SP2 for free at anytime. Pay 1 got 2 right :D
