Need advice on replacing "clunking" hard drive

The hard drive on my new T61 is making a periodic clunking sound so IBM has sent me a replacement. Installation seems pretty straightforward but I'm wondering about the best way to get the OS and other software back to status quo. What's the best way?
Thanks.

Product Recovery disks  for status quo ante or clone an image of your current hdd with a third party software.

Hard Drive Cloning HOW TO is also a part of forum FAQs.

Is the clunking sound repeated a number of times in rapid succession, or are you hearing an occasional sound somewhat like a marble dropping? If it's the latter, that's a characteristic of the head-parking feature of the drive and is not a defect.

Sometimes the marble dropping sound can indicate a failing drive. A hard drive test is the only way to be sure it is defective. Any time I hear that sound I check the drive just to be sure.

Thanks ryengineer.

The "clunking" is sporadic and when it occurs it does so for a period of time in succesion then stops. There appears to be no rhyme or reason. It is a kind of "thunk" sound. I searched this forum and this thread appears to be most relevant:

Thanks guys.
