I'm definitely not the most technically versed member of this forum, but something has been bugging which leads to this question;
The use of jumpers on hdds in ultrabay adapters is discussed in these two posts:

I am not saying that anybody is wrong, but; I use hdd adapters in all of my ThinkPads; T23, T43 and T61. I use them primarily to back up my main hdd files. However, I also use them for securing / recovering files from customers' drives who are experiencing windows problems. I have lost count of the different hdds which I have had in the adapters, I have never ever had to set a jumper. As I see it the adapter can't accept a hdd with jumper. Why ( when ) do drives in the bay adapters need to be jumpered?

Re: Ultrabay Hard Drive Adapters And Jumpers
I'm not sure why those posters are even having those conversations, either. I use Ultra Bay adapters for both a SATA drive in my T60, and the IDE drive adapters in my other three ThinkPads, and there is no need for any sort of jumper.andyP wrote:I'm definitely not the most technically versed member of this forum, but something has been bugging which leads to this question;

Not only that, I run the 2nd hard drive in a Ultra Bay slim adapter which is necessary in the T43p, and that same adapter also works in the other non-slim Ultra Bay slots in two other machines. There's a couple of milimeters gap at the top, but that's the only difference.

AFAIK, most Thinkpads (excluding those with SATA) all have primary and secondary IDE channels (IDE1 and IDE2).
The hard disk sits on IDE1 as a master.
The optical drive or floppy or Ultrabay adapter with hard disk sit on IDE2, also as master.
All 2.5" hard disks that I know, and which go in such a ThinkPad, do NOT need any jumpers.
No jumper = Master.
I don't know about 3-spindle machines such as the A31p.
User FrankK-F insists his Ultrabay-HD needs to be set as Slave. If that were the case, he may need a special hard disk, rather than a standard 2.5", as there is no room to set any jumpers.

That's pretty much what I thought, I think you're right, just had a look in device manager, with 2nd hdd in T43 and I see primary and secondary, that suggests that no jumper necessary.RealBlackStuff wrote:AFAIK, most Thinkpads (excluding those with SATA) all have primary and secondary IDE channels (IDE1 and IDE2).
