Hey all,
I have a R50 I love- I just got a T40 on ebay for my mom for christmas and it has the dreaded GPU/Ball solder freeze problem so I am going to have to return it ot the seller.
He has asked if I would like a refund or a replacement... I think I am going to go for a refund or ask for a differnt model as I didn't know it was this common...
This is just for my mom to browse internet, email and basic wordprocessing.
Thanks!
Andrew

What other models does this seller have?
You already have an R50. Are you trying to get something better than this R50, e.g. faster, lighter, higher display resolution? Would you mind getting another R-series Thinkpad?

I also forgot to mention that it has to be able to run XP.
I liked the idea of the T as it was thinner as she plans to use it to travel to florida during the winter. But possibly it's thinness is why it is susceptible to motherboard failure. I have thought about getting another R but thought maybe it will fail any day now as well as I bought it new in 2004... The Sony VAIO GRX550 I had was super expensive and MUCH heavier than even the R and it still had a motherboard failure at the RAM slots.
I would be fine with another R if they are as reliable used as the one I have.

If she travels a lot, look at the X31's. You can find one in that price range. They are Pentium M's, so XP is not an issue. It's a 12" screen though...XGA (1024x768). It's advantages include small size, light weight, long battery life. Basically it's designed to travel.
