Heavy loaded PCI-e card (eSata + more)

#1 Post by commander » Sat Dec 08, 2007 6:07 am

Hello,

I want to buy Advanced dock for my T60, and fit a 500GB disc to it. Because USB are slow, FireWire is not there, i recognised after a lot of reading here that the best is eSata interface. The advanced dock has 1 PCIe slot, so I am looking for some eSata card, but except this the dock has only 4 USB etc... So do you know any eSata card, which has more connections than eSata? USB, FW, anything useful would be fine.

P.S.: I hope that this 1xPCIe slot is not limited to 34 MB/s as a UltraBay...

It was my understanding that because of the interface between the computer and the Advance dock that it was limited. That the interface itself was the problem. I thought that test have been run, and a eSATA card in the express slot gave better throughput than a card in the Advance dock. Of course I could be wrong on that.....

You could buy a PCI-e card with 3x FW800 and 3x USB2.0 here:
http://www.usb-ware.com/sonnet-firewire ... xpress.htm
It's a x8PCI-e, don't know if that works in the x1PCI-e slot of that dock.
Or look at other cards they have there (or elsewhere).
You could also consider a PCMCIA FW/USB card for in the laptop OR in the dock.

Thank you, that card looks good, but it has no eSata :( And it require "Desktop computer with available x1 PCI Express (PCI-e) slot" so it may fit.

The advanced dock has PCMCIA slot?

Sorry, just assumed it would be there, similar to previous docks.
No, there is no PCMCIA slot in the Advanced Dock.

But I think this card with both internal and external eSATA ports is your best option, with 3GB/s data transfer

Hi again,

I found this wonderful card!
http://www.kouwell.com.tw/pr-m2.htm < the first one.

USB, FW, eSata. Absolutely dream. Only fault is, that its only PCI, not PCI-e. Can I buy Advanced dock with PCI slot (not PCIe), will brandwitch of PCI enaght or do you see any other faults?

Thanks

Both cards are only SATA I, with 1.5GB/s. The FW and USB2.0 are a bonus, but both cards will NOT fit in the advanced dock, as they are PCI.
If mostly you are after an extra, fast hard disk, then 'my' card with SATA II is so far your best option.
AFAIK there is no advanced dock (or other dock) for a T60 with just a PCI slot.
