My friend recently bought a Thinkpad T61, and he wants to hook it up to his TV to watch movies. He has an older 36" analog set with analog composite and component inputs. I gave him an S-vid cable, only to realize that T61 apparently got rid of the S-vid port :(

so I found this product at monoprice, looks like it should work for him.

However, the description on the product states:
This cable is primarily used for connecting video projectors with Component-in capability through it's VGA port. It can only function with a VGA port that is either able to recieve or transmit Component signals (Y, Pr, Pb).

IT WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CONNECT YOUR COMPONENT VIDEO SOURCES TO A REGULAR COMPUTER MONITOR OR HDTV unless you monitor specifically has this capability. Most do not. (Please check the documentation for your computer monitor)

THIS CABLE WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CONNECT YOUR COMPUTER'S VGA PORT TO THE COMPONENET INPUT ON YOUR HDTV unless your video card supports component out function through it's VGA port (please confirm with your video cards documentation before purchasing)

This cable will not convert RGBHV into Y, Pr, Pb.
This cable will not convert Y, Pr, Pb to RGBHV
This cable will not support Y, Cr, Cb.
my question is: is changing the output from RGB to YPrPb something that most video cards are capable of doing? does this have anything to do with "color profile" settings on the video cards?

For both questions: I doubt it.

I had an old ATI Desktop video card which had this feature, at least with an optional dongle. ATI wrote about the feature on their website, on the page for that video card.

Another option might be DVI output from the Advanced Dock or Advanced Mini Dock.
