System Update fails to start

To start off I am running Windows Vista Business with 4gigs of ram on a T61p. When I start System update I get an error "TVSU.exe has stopped working". This is running the latest version of System Update that is out there, just installed today. I was getting a similar error previously but it was stuck in a loop and I had to end the task.

If I look in Problem Reports and Solutions I can see the errror happened in TVSUTIL.DLL but I have no idea how to fix it:

Does anyone have any idea what causes this problem and how to fix it or get around it?

Thanks,

There's a long thread about it here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?=&p=260066. I had this problem and found that it was because I'd disabled the Server service, but you may have another cause--different solutions reported on the thread.

I have same SystemUpdate problem exactly

When I read dasbeez's post it could have been written by me. I have the exact machine even to the extent of having 4 gigs of Ram that only shows up as 3 gigs.

I have tried everything I can think of. My wife had a similar problem and fixed it by uninstalling as much of dotnet as she could and then reinstalling all of it. I did so to the extent possible but as far as I can tell it is not possible to uninstall dotnet 2.0 from Vista.

The only odd thing I can find is in C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\logs\service_log.txt which shows an error involving registry issues. This was after completely uninstalling System Update and re-installing it. I am not sure how to fix this and do not know if it the root of my problem. Here are the log contents:

I noticed an error in the Application Event log. The source was listed as 'SideBySide' but as you will see below it refers to the installation of System Update:

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\Installer64.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT,processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50608.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

The odd think about is that I do not have an amd64 processor but have an Intel Core 2 Duo T7500

Sorry to say but I never fixed mine...

I ended up doing a re-install :(

My wife, on XP, fixed this problem by uninstalling all versions of dotnet and then reinstalling them in order but this did not work for me on Vista -- perhaps because I could not find a way to uninstall dotnet 2 since for Vista it is considered part of the OS.

On the plus side, once I did the re-install the latest tvsu did work. I allowed System Update to update itself (which took multiple iterations) -- in other words I did not manually install the latest System Update from Lenove/IBM.
