I am thinking of getting rid of my desktop computer in favor of a good laptop.
I use my current desktop quite a bit and am a little concerned about the durability of a laptop being in use so much.
Has anyone here gone this route?

IMO, a laptop that always or nearly always sits on a desk lasts as long as a desktop, provided that you get it to stand by or shut it down when it's not in use. Laptops that move around a lot aren't as durable, for obvious reasons.

I have an IBM Desktop at home that I intend to keep for family use as well as stuff that I do.

However, I work for myself, and currently have an IBM T41 laptop that travels with me wherever I go and has done for over five years. It has the patina of wear, but otherwise works perfectly well.

I knocked it onto the floor in a London hotel in 2005 (running and wide open). I picked it up and moved on. I was on transit yesterday with the machine off and in my bag. The bus lurched unexepectedly and the bag hit the floor with a thud. I picked it up, started the machine at the client and moved on.

The paragraph above is a longish story to say that the T41 can service as an only machine with no difficulty at all.

In addition, the machine runs whatever I want with no restrictions including as many as 3 independent computers running simulataneously via VMware.

Those are exactly the answers I expected and was hoping for.
I dont use my computers for playing any elaborate games, or anything super important....just every day web surfing and Email, but it is usually left on for long periods of time...I dont like waiting for it to boot up everytime.

The hard drive, mobo and screen tend to last longer if you put the machine to sleep when you aren't using it for a while. For Thinkpads, just press "Fn" and "F4". It takes only several seconds to wake up.

I agree. My T41 goes full off nightly when I pack it in my bag for the next day. ... JDH
