System Update 3.13 problem packages do not install on X61

#1 Post by Mahatma » Sun Feb 10, 2008 10:50 pm

System update isn't working on my X60s:

- it seems to detect accurately what I need, goes through the installation process, but in the end "does not install"

- this is true even if check the alternative of downloading for later installation

- I updated to 3.13 (the most current)

- I updated with Windows update to .Net 2.0

- I tried different times of day

- I tried many programs, urgent ones only, etc.

I'm running a fairly ordinary XP system. One theory is I may have shut off something in Services.msc (done as a tweak to speed up the machine) but most of what I turned off is only relevant to a network (I work standalone). For example, I turned off indexing, and remote desktop.

Any ideas? System updates has three critical issues, not including a bios update that's not a bad idea.

Thanks for any tips!

ThinkVantage System Update requires Windows XP with SP2 or later. You also don't mention which services you disabled, "TVT Scheduler" and "System Update" are the core services System Update uses, there may be more that plays a part to display respiratory to you so it would be better if you reenable the services which you've disabled.

Manually downloading packages is also an alternative option.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks. TVTscheduler *was* disabled (hey, a T42 on XP really SINGS when you turn off indexing and a few other things) but unfortunately turning it back on (and eventually, nearly all other services) didn't help. System Update was already on.

"Manually downloading packages is also an alternative option"

Thanks, although that's daunting. System Update shows that I need a lot of stuff, 3 of them critical, and that doesn't include the BIOS update. The danger of individual downloads (apart from time) is the possiblity of installing the wrong things -- and the possible messes that can result.

Any other suggestions? Does Lenovo provide support? Does some log identify why System Update doesn't actually do anything?

I've always found System Update spotty (sometimes offering as an update an older version) but now it starts slow, takes a long time to download, and doesn't install anything. Errk.

WELL, I still haven't gotten it running, but I'm making progress. Maybe. Or at least found potentially useful information -- perhaps someone here knows what these things (2 log files from my machine, and a website discussion of a possibly similar problem) means more than I do.

Note that on my T42, at least, the DOS prompt command
attrib -r -h -s c:\program files\lenovo\system updates\*.*
should be "update" (no "s").

Also, I'm hesitant to delete my c:\drivers and c:\ibmtools folders.

Also I don't have this key in my registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\AccessIBM\TEXT\LAUNCHER

but I do have this, which sounds similar (not that "similar" means much in the registry!).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\ThinkPadSoftwareInstaller

Turns out *lots* and *lots* of things can inhibit System Update from working.

This thread helps explain some of them:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 04&start=0

I find System Update idiotic. The idea it DOWNLOADS updates, and puts them in a place I can't find, and then FAILS to install them is plain annoying.

I can install them fine when I download them individually --- you'd think at a minimum I could use System Update to at least automate the downloading process. I didn't update my machine for a long time (8 months?) and accordingly it had tons of things to update, not all of which are easy to find. Most idiotically, one of the first things it seeks to update is... System Update itself, despite the fact I have the most recent version.

Errk!
