Buying a ThinkPad in Hong Kong

#1 Post by kylera » Sat Feb 16, 2008 11:07 am

A comparison between the TP lineup offered by Lenovo Korea and Hong Kong has convinced me to buy one in HK (as well as other minor quibbles) while I visit a friend there. To those living there right now, where can I get a good deal retail-wise?

I would probably try the computer district around Shum Shui Po. Here is a bit of info for the area: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sham_Shui_Po

Wanchai Computer Center next to the Wanchai MTR has a few good Thinkpad Branded shops. (Compared to Sham Shui Po, this center is more professional (No Porn or pirate goods))

You will find a good selection of models available on the second floor in the larger shops.

You may find some units are from Singapore but this does not affect the keyboard layout or warranty.

Prices are very competitive with so many shops selling the same goods within the same area, you can usually get a free laptop bag and price reduction on the spot.

Are there many scammers in that area? Like asking for a product on display only to get an inferior model, etc.

No, I've bought two Thinkpads and both had the model and spec noted beside the serial number. I checked the config before they opened the box.

They opened the box and powered the machines to check the spec, configuration and display without any prompting from me.
