240X BIOS chip Question (Sort of) Here.

I have this 240X machine that I thought was dead. It wouldn’t even display any of the LED lights on boot. I’m talking no fan sound no drive activity not even the battery light displayed amber or green. I tried booting it from battery and external power with no change.

Then, while working with a different 240, I discovered that things started to work when there wasn’t a hard drive plugged in to the 240X. It wouldn’t go to BIOS setup or even give me a screen of anything but some of the LEDs came on and the beeper sounded. The beeper was one solid tone that never quit or pulsed. I had to loose the battery and pull the power to stop it. I could have held down the power button I guess.

For grins, I switched out the BIOS chip with the 240X just to see if it worked in the 240 and it didn’t. Also the BIOS chip from the 240 didn’t work in the 240X. I know that the 240 and the 240X have different types of CPUs but I figured that just maybe the BIOS would swap since they both had the same numbers on the chip.

By the way, the hard drive that didn’t work in the 240X does work in the 240 so it isn’t the hard drive. Something is loading up when the drive is installed. Maybe that took out the BIOS chip.

Can anyone shed some light here? Regarding the 240Xs, what circuit is in common with the BIOS and the hard drive that will sap all of the current?

Any suggestions as to what I should look for or try?
