Hey,
Recently CSS has been really annoying. For some reason it asks me to confirm my windows password every time I start up Windows (XP).
The following screen is the one that turns up whenever windows is started:

I type in my windows password, but it fails to recognize it, and gives me an error. I have tried my current password and a couple of old passwords. I changed authentication method to fingerprint software rather than CSS, but the pop up still shows up.
The weird thing is CSS does know the correct password, since it passes the correct password to the windows log in box (when WinLogin is used)

I hope it makes sense, and that somebody will be able to help me out here.

System info:
X60 with WinXP SP2, CSS 8.10.0006.00

I had the same problem on my R60. The soulution of this problem is reseting the TPM.

It goes something like this:

- reboot,
- than presssing X times Esc key,
- when the Win booting dialog will showed turn off ThinkPad
- that power on and enter the bios (F1 key) and find Security/security chip/reset,
- reboot and type new password into CSS
- it´s done

CSS does this when your Windows password gets reset (rather than changed). When this problem started occurring, did you just reset your password? If so, reset your password back to what it used to be, then change it properly. A change occurs when both the current and new password is specified. The proper method to change your password is via ctrl-alt-del or the user control panel application. A reset occurs when only a new password is specified (e.g. through the computer management screen).

Resetting your password will also cause you to lose encrypted files (EFS) and certificates, in addition to screwing up CSS.

I tried that already. I am not aware of resetting my password, but I might have done so anyway
Either way, I set it back to what it used to be and that is why CSS still works partly (i.e. it passes the right password to the Win log in box when I swipe my finger).
However, when I try to change it via ctrl alt del CSS does not recognize it, and when I try to tell it what the new password is, I get the same box as shown in the first post.

BTW: the recovery password function of the predesktop does not longer work. I can click on it, but no box shows up.

I can't really tell you why CSS is doing this, other than suggest that some external event messed up the windows crypto storage, and usually this is caused by resetting your windows password. At this point I would recommend reconfiguring CSS. You can do this by launching CSS from the start menu and choosing the option to "reset security settings" in the "advanced" menu. Hope this helps..
