Thinkpad UltraNav keyboard problem

#1 Post by argonaut » Mon Mar 10, 2008 9:36 am

I recently bought a Thinkpad USB UltraNav travel keyboard (see link below);

http://www5.pc.ibm.com/uk/products.nsf/ ... eb_express

I'm having a problem with it. At the moment it is attached to the USB port of my HP Compaq Evo desktop PC. The computer is running XP Pro SP2. When I switch the computer on and attempt to logon to my account with my password the computer will not recognise the password when I type it using the UltraNav. I have to use the original HP Compaq keyboard to type the password instead. Once I'm past the password stage of logon the computer does recognise the UltraNav key inputs in the normal way for every other usage.

The UltraNav came with a utilities disk which I installed. I can't quite understand why I'm having this problem. I've changed the password using the UltraNav, but when booting up again the password isn't recognised when typed using the UltraNav - I have to go back to the HP Compaq keyboard to do this.

I wonder if anyone might know why I'm having this problem and what the solution might be? I don't really want to have two keyboards on my desk if at all possible.

Many thanks, Jason.

argonaut, welcome to the forum

Not knowing your password, could it be that you have NumLocks selected as "on" in BIOS?

Hi Andy

Nice to be here. Thanks.

My password contains only letters and no numbers and so I don't think the "on" idea is the cause of the problem, but I have a feeling the problem is being caused by something as equally straight forward. I just can't work out what it might be.

I see you are awaiting delivery of an X300. I'm thinking about getting one too. I'd be interested in your opinion of it.

Thanks, Jason.

Just a thought, if numlock were turned on but the kb has other settings in windows which load after the logon, and as the kb doesn't have a number block it's possible then that e.g. U=1, I=5 etc.

re X300, nonny has rightly pointed you to the X300 board. re my thoughts - as it says in my sig; "anxiously awaiting" :D

Success!!! Great news and thanks for the prompting suggestions

Apologies for the slight deviation in my own thread topic. My gushing enthusiasm as a newbie forumite got the better of me. I must watch out for that in future and restrain myself a little. :D

Now, where is that x300 thread...............?
