Access Connection still viable?

#1 Post by Skysurfer » Mon Mar 17, 2008 10:41 am

I'm on a T43 and running Access Connection v 3.71...that crashes several times a day. I've used AC on all my Thinkpads over the years, but have never experienced so many crashes.

Is the latest version of AC posted on the Lenovo site stable enough to be better than what my T43 is running now?

Thanks,

Lawrence

That's quite an old version!

You should upgrade to the current version of AC (4.42) and WiFi card drivers ASAP.

Okay, thanks. I called IBM/Lenovo and got all the latest drivers and the order in which I should install them all.

And then I had no network access at all!

When I called IBM/Lenovo back, they said:
"We don't suppprt WEP encryption."
"You'll have to reinstall your OS."
"Don't use Access connections."

Sooooo...I uninstalled then reinstalled Access Connections and all the profiles...and SUCCESS!!!

But there is one remaining glitch: Whenever I switch from wired to wireless or the other way, I need to reset the modem and/or router. what's up with that???

BTW, this site ROCKS. This is where the true Thinkpad knowledge base and (friendly) community resides. Thank you all!

Every time I've had the poor judgement to update drivers (which aren't needed for my 2005 T43), I've had to completely reconfigure my connection to my router. I don't do that no more. YMMV, of course.

(I stopped upgrading at 3.8something, I think, avoiding the 4.0, 4.01, 4.02, etc, which were wreaking havoc, then finally settled 4.12 or something.[1] I presume that the more recent versions are stable.)

[1](Not on my T43 and can't check at the moment.)

That shouldn't happen, and hasn't happened for me with any version of AC. What make and model router are you using?

Bill

I have a T43 running version 4.21, no problems, so you might want to try updating your current version. I have never had any issues with AC and I think I have had 2-3 versions since the T43 was purchased in 2005.

The wireless router is a Linksys WRT54 G v3. AC 4.42 has partially resolved one irritating problem: the wireless transmission rate would fall off to (a useless) 24mbps at least once a day. Now it falls off once every few days and it simply means that I have to tell AC to disconnect and then reconnect and I'm fine.

I'll be heading into the corporate oaffice tomorrow and am looking forward to how l our IT expert handles adding a wired Ethernet connection using AC. (I was forced to do reformat the harddrive a few weeks ago and will now need to have wired access reconfigured.)

When you said you had a problem "switching" from wireless to wired (etc) were you talking aboiut switching between networks (and therefore AC profiles) or talking about switching between a wired and wireless connection on the same network and AC profile?

Bill,

I had two profiles set up in AC, one wired and the other wireless. Fo some mysterious reason, if went from wireless to wired the connection was NOT automatic. I was forced to renew my IP in DOS to change to wired.

This morning, I'm sitting in our corporate offices and the second I snapped in the Ethernet line I got instantaneous network access. AC never entered the picture. That was the type of automatic results I was used to at home before I pgraded to AC 4.42.
