Configuring a USB/serial port

I found this site quite by accident but you have already helped me out of a situation - thanks.

I'm trying to configure a USB/serial port's advanced settings and get the following error: "You must have write priviledges in the registry for the device in order to modify the advanced settings for this device".

I'm the owner (administrator) and only user and don't understand why I'm getting this message now when I didn't before.

It may be that a program or service is interfering with your attempts to change the settings, or that Windows just doesn't like people fiddling with what you're fiddling with and tries to prevent it. Try running in safe mode, and try as the hidden Administrator user account. I don't think it has any more privileges than any other administrator-level user, but it might be worth a shot.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think to try running in safe mode. It must be 1 of my security programs preventing me from making the change.

Final update: I plugged the adapter in my wife's T-43 (yes, we're a Thinkpad family, I also gave my son a T-42 awhile back), had it search the internet for a driver and it allowed me to make the change. So I updated the driver in my T-60 and voila, I was able to modfy the advanced settings. I guess it makes sense to keep the drivers up to date.
