I just click on the add we have on this forum (top middle banner) and I almost fell off the chair for the money they ask for them

I know for sure that official Lenovo is selling this item for MUCH LESS money

Does anybody knows what is going on?

I would buy it from the official lenovo site then. If they are overpriced they will not sell many of them. Vote with your wallet.

I found some cheaper ones on eBay.

Since this forum is a vast reservoir of knowledge financed by Mr. Morrow and a couple of sponsors, I feel that we really shouldn't be criticizing people who keep it running...but budget ourselves and thank our lucky stars that we're not seeing Google ads here yet...

of course its you right to be romantic but what difference would it make if instead of these sponsors we have here google ads?
it wasn't my intentions just to criticize the sponsor, but to know if there is something special about these caddies

A tremendous difference that we hopefully won't get to see, ever.

One of the things that makes this site so great is the fact that there are no aggressive pop-up ads trying to steer you in a certain direction...

My point being, at least this stuff is ThinkPad-related, whether you, me or anyone else buys it is a whole another matter, but the fact is that it helps keep this forum afloat.

Most of Thinkpad(older) doesn't really need the caddy anyway. I worked on 390x, 600X, 1300 and 1400, you can just tape something to the HD so you can pull it out. Though, you need the adapter.

The value proposition here is that they make it very simple to buy the correct caddy for a wide range of laptops from multiple manufacturers.

For somone who just wants a single caddy on a right-first-time basis, and doesn't want to get into manufacturers part numbering schemes (IBM/Lenovo FRUs) etc etc its a very attractive value proposition.

If you don't like their offer you don't have to purchase from them.

... which is irrelevant in this case because google ads are not pop-ups, are not graphically aggresive, and are context-sensitive, so you'd still be seeing ads related at least to laptops if not Thinkpads.

Things are just fine the way they are...

If you've been to other forums, you'd realize that you're constantly
getting a "Pop-up" add everytime you move your mouse pointer
and it happens to hit one of those higlighted "Keywords" that are
actually triggers for the pop-up's... And yes, they ARE owned and
provided by Google...

And with a bit of patience you can find the source of those popups/highlights.

I have added these lines to my hosts file:

127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 www.google-analytics.com

No more popping up of irritating explanations/adverts.

The only forum I've seen these on had the ads provided by Kontera, who to the best of my knowledge is not owned or provided by Google. I know I don't read that many forums though... can you point me to one that uses Google contextual pop-in ads?

It's perhaps worth explaining that the traditional "pop-ups" (new browser windows, usually resized, would appear on the taskbar or tab bar) are not the same as the contextual ads in "pop-ins", or whatever one wishes to call them, that do not open a new window but look like a separate box, and only appear when you mouse over a (usually underlined) keyword.

Google's statement refers to the former. I have not seen them do either.

Since this thread has no wandered completely off the original topic, and onto something which has nothing specifically to do with Thinkpad - General HARDWARE/SOFTWARE questions, it is being closed.

If anyone really needs to discuss blocking popup ads or similar, please start a new thread in the "Off Topic" forum.
