How do I get rid of OS selection list when booting Win XP?

#1 Post by Tony's X60s » Wed Apr 23, 2008 5:33 am

I have just upgraded my X60s hard drive from the original 60GB to a new 250GB drive. I used the 'how to do a clean XP install' procedure so kindly contributed by another forum member. However my first attempt failed because I didn't select 'compatibility mode' for HDD in the BIOS, so I started again. This time it worked fine, but I only did a quick format not a full one in the first step of the procedure (since I had already done a full format). Now I have a very annoying screen pop up immediately after POST to ask me what OS I wish to boot - Windows XP Pro or Windows XP Pro? It is as if the BIOs is seeing both the original failed attempt and the later successful one. If I select the first instance, it starts normally. If I select the second, I get an error.

Is there any way to remove this short of doing the whole process again? Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Edit the file c:\boot.ini

afterwards it should look like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

You currently have 2 of these lines under [operating system]

This forum is incredible value because of people like you who so willingly and generously (and incredibly promptly) spend time to share your expertise. It's too late tonight, but I'll try your recommendation tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

Thank you - I thought I was going to spend the next two years hitting that return key every time I booted my laptop.

This is described from memory so I might be off a little but it should get you there.
Right click "My Computer" select "Properties", Click "Advanced", Click "Startup and Shutdown", Uncheck "Show list of Operating Systems", Click "OK" all the way out.

Both methods work - problem solved. Thanks again.
