Questions about T40/T41

#1 Post by gopher » Fri Dec 10, 2004 2:59 am

For several reasons I'm switching from my current Asus Notebook to an IBM one, mainly because of the poor keyboard, weight,

size, the bad quality of the housing, and the heat development (I hope thats the right word to use ;)).

I did some searching already, and cut it down to two models, the t40(p) and the t41(p), the former because of a good deal

I'm getting on it. It still leaves my with some questions though, mainly to do with the "battery usage", ie. which component uses more power:

1) A 14" TFT with 1400*1050 pixels or one with only 1024*768?
2) 1x1024 MB or 2x512 MB
3) A Pentium M with 1,7 Ghz or one with 1.4/1.5 Ghz, both running at only 600 Mhz
4) A harddisk with 60 GB & 7200rpm or one with 80 GB & only 5400 rpm
5) Are the batteries that come with either the t40 and the t41 identical?
6) The last one: Can you work comfortably with only with a resolution of only 1024*768 (mainly coding)

Thanks for your answers already, and sorry for my sloppy english ;(

Gah, I should register on this board so I can edit my posts :o

Anyways, I got one more question: Can someone tell me how warm the cpu gets when a) running at only 600 Mhz and b) when running at full speed.

For my T40p

@600 Mhz 37 38 celcius
@1.6 Ghz between 40 an 80 celcius, depend of the charge of the cpu
T41 2373-1FG
T40p 2373-EG3 perhaps...

Nice ;)

My Asus was getting a 55 ° C @ 600 Mhz (Idle, AND undervolted) and 70 ° C at 1500 Mhz (Idle, and undervolted again).

For battery usage...First, get a T41 or T42 with an extended battery...gets you about 7 hours of life with that. Slight protrusion in the back of the unit for the extra three battery cells.

Which consumes more power

1) A 14" TFT with 1400*1050 pixels or one with only 1024*768?
The 1400x1050 uses more power. But if you are doing coding, I would get the extra screen space

2) 1x1024 MB or 2x512 MB
Negligible...the 1GB would use less, but its not even worth considering. You will save some money getting two 512MB

3) A Pentium M with 1,7 Ghz or one with 1.4/1.5 Ghz, both running at only 600 Mhz.
Get the 1.7 or higher. You can adjust performance as you see fit. But you can't make it go faster if its just a 1.4

4) A harddisk with 60 GB & 7200rpm or one with 80 GB & only 5400 rpm
Interestingly the 60GB 7200 RPM drive draws as much as the 5400 one. But the performance is very noticible. I would always choose the 60GB 7200 RPM drive...which is what I have...

5) Are the batteries that come with either the t40 and the t41 identical?
yes, for both the regular and extended. That applies to the T42 as well.

6) The last one: Can you work comfortably with only with a resolution of only 1024*768 (mainly coding). You can...and some people don't like the fact that fonts and such will be smaller on the 1400x1050 in native res. I thought so too. But now, having used the 1400x1050 for some time, I prefer it to the 1024x768 display. Everything has more granular detail on the 1400x1050.

1) & 6) I looked at some NBs last night, and I found 1400*1050 even on an 15" screen too small, whereas 1024*768 looked just fine. But I still haven't decided. We'll see ;)

2) How much do I save approx? Close to 1W or more like <0.1W?

3) The thing is: I was running my old NB on 600 Mhz 90% of the time anyways, and a faster cpu usually comes with more ram/hdd which is more expensive than upgrading it yourself ;) I'm willing to pay the extra buch for an ibm, but I still want to save money where I can without cutting down on features etc ;)

4) I heard from many people though that the 7200 rpm driver are a lot of times loud and/or getting hot.

Thanks for your answers so far drake :)
