Faulty wireless mini-pci or faulty laptop. or neither?

I bought an Atheros 5212A Wireless A/B/G Mini PCI card from ebay. In preparation before the installation I updated to the latest BIOS and Controller versions as well as applied the no-1802 trick. After I installed the card the laptop acted as if nothing were ever put in it
, in Windows I tried looking through device manager, nothing! I even went through a linux distro and punched in ifconfig. So I assumed that it was faulty and sent it back to the seller for a replacement
, my replacement arrived today and I tried to install it again but alas I have the same problem. If anybody could solve my problem I'd be extremely grateful. Thanks
.
P.S. The laptop is an IBM Thinkpad T40 if that helps?

You need to install the drivers before you insert the card, otherwise nothing happens (as in your case).

It should ask for drivers at the very least. In Linux, use "lspci", because if drivers aren't loaded "ifconfig -a" won't list it (although most distros do have the driver already.).
If you still have your old card, if it works then it probably is not the fault of the laptop.

But even so it should still come up in Device Manager or the like as an unknown device right?

Yeah my old card works flawlessly although it is only a wireless b card. I need wireless g

AFAIK a number of those cards are not P&P.
That's why you need to install the drivers first.
What is the exact make/model of your card, and which drivers are you using? (using XP I presume)

I'm using Windows XP and various live cd linux distros, although I'd prefer to get it working in XP first before attempting linux.
Directly off the chip it reads.
ATHEROS with a large "A" and arch over it.

Strange. I would've thought linux would have drivers built in for the atheros chips?

Is there a better site I can get them from? Because on that site you have to pay for the drivers or sign up for membership.

Ok it seems I have fixed my problem by downgrading the bios
