Do an "IBM Service Manual" exist (not the HMM)?

#1 Post by Johan » Mon Jun 23, 2008 1:39 am

Sometimes I have stumbled (e.g. on eBay) over what is said to be an "IBM Service Manual" - such as this one. Other similar manuals are found here. I wonder if anybody know if that is just the Hardware Maintenance Manual that some "clever" person has downloaded (completely free of charge!) from IBM's site, and is then try to sell for money?? Or do an "IBM Service Manual" really exist - e.g. for T42/p's?

If the latter indeed is the case, it could certainly be interesting to obtain a copy!

IBM/lenovo Service Manuals exist, they're issued to technicians and Service Centers and are different than HMMs, that is not it they're also provided with special service videos and courses which are of course not available to end users.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Oh-hoo; that was really interesting information, ryengineer - thank you for sharing this knowledge! Although I am not a service technician (I am only an amateur, although an enthusiastic one!), I think it might be worth to spend $8 to obtain a copy of a T42/p Service Manual - unless I can Google it up entirely free somewhere...

Again: Thank you very much for this information - much appreciated!

Johan, don't fall for that scam!
For one thing, that is not even a photo of a T4x CMOS battery holder, but of a T2x, from the HMM on page 61.

There are very few (if any) non-IBM/Lenovo employees, who have such a manual. If it were for real, it would sell at 10x that price, if not more!

All he tries to flog there, are a bunch of HMMs you can download for free!

Aaargh, Dominic: You just saved me from wasting $8 - phew! - it was soo close!

Too bad; I guess I just "interpreted" ryengineer's words as this (the thingy on eBay) was a genuine T42/p "IBM Service Manual"... and now look; I am all dissapointed! :(

OK, thanks for your anti-scam-teaching; it just might be people like me who fuel such scammers to go on (although I never - at least yet! - actually got scammed).

Thanks - and feel free to let me know if you (or anyone else?) should ever come across a genuine T42/p IBM Service Manual.

Best regards,

Johan

Go to the Lenovo website, click on support, click on "detect my system" and you will get to a page that has pointers to info for your system. On the far left there is an area for user guides. Click on that and you may find pointers to multiple guides for your system. For my T40 I found both a "Service and Troubleshooting Guide" and the "Hardware and Maintenance Guide".

Edited to add that this is the Service and Troubleshooting Guide that came with the computer and not designed for workbench service people. However if you didn't get it with your computer there is info in it for common problems.

Thanks, MarT40, but what you are pointing to is not quite what I was looking for... I already both have the Hardware Maintenance Manual (pointed to above), and also the Service and Troubleshooting Guide - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, T43/p, which are neither what I understand (and would expect) that a "Service Manual" is.

Thanks, anyway...
