R51/R52 Drive issues relating to Roxio

I'm curious to see if anyone else has run into this problem that I had with my wife's R51/R52. A couple of weeks ago, I was setting up my wife's "new" R51 when toward the end of the loading software process, the DVD Multi-Burner began to not recognized software disks. I tried the disk in another machine and it was fine. Then I tried different drives in the UltraBay and they exhibited the same behavior. I never did look into it very far since I realized that it has some other issues and sent it to my brother for him to look at. In turn, he sent me an R52 to replace it.

So, back to the drawing boards and began the software load process again. Everything went fine right up until the last couple of software packages when lo-and-behold, the same (not recognizing disks) issue came back. Again, I went through the same switching out disks and disk drives drill to no avail, when it occurred to me that the last things I loaded was a screen saver package that my wife loves and Roxio Easy DVD & CD Creator 6.

I removed the screen saver first figuring it to be the most likely culprit with the same results as before. Which was a surprise since I don't have a very good opinion of those things going back to the "flying toaster" days and furthermore, I've used that Roxio burner software on all of my computers with burners for several years.

Anyway, the upshot is that I then removed the Roxio software and now everything is fine. :? This is a head-scratcher since I use that software in my T41, my T30 before that, my wife's old A31 and my desktop and they all seem to be OK. At the moment, the R52 has no burner software on it.

Thoughts anyone?

which burner is it?

i've used roxio 6 on my machines for ages, but haven't yet loaded it onto my t43. since roxio 6 is pretty dated, maybe it just doesn't recognize/support the drive if it's much more recent?

I used a Lenovo/Multi Burner which was the original issue, and I think you are right in that the drive was too new, but in the middle of this process, I also tried the IBM/Multi Burner from my T41 (which is running that piece of software) and it exhibited the same issues. So that's a head scratcher. :?

Schen, if you just want to get a burner program on there, have you tried Sonic RecordNow?

Thanks, that's probably where I'm going to end up going with this. I was curious whether anyone else had come across this rather strange issue and what they ended up doing about it. And we've been using Roxio for a number of years (back to before they were Roxio), so I figured it was worth looking into.

Roxio, and lately also Nero, produce a load of bloatware.

A lean, efficient package is the free CDburnerXP http://cdburnerxp.se/
