Upgrade suggestions (600E User)

Think its time to get a new Thinkpad, cost of upgrading Vs performace got, it may just be better to buy a later Thinkpad. At the moment I have a 600E (Pentium 3 450Mhz, 384Mb RAM, 20Gb HD, CDrom)

Pretty cluless about what to get as I don't need the latest and greatest but something with some go in my basic tasks would be nice. What I use it for :

Internet browsing & FTP
The odd DOS game
Watching videos online (600E FAILS bad here for me 5-8FPS :/ )
Around the same size as the 600 :)
Fair battery life
Open Office
DVD drive (just because :D )

My main reason for a upgrade is the general sluggish performace of the video in the 600E, I tried different drivers, settings etc. im sure things got worse when I moved to XP, YouTube etc is impossible to watch at best aroubd 10FPS I am sure, even when fully loaded. I know I could get a faster Pentium 3 CPU but there not to easy to get or cheap in the UK, besides my screens going dim, I have a US keyboard and the PCMCIA card slots seem to have a habit of working when they want. Don't mind 2nd hand.

I was looking at the R40 but im sure it looks obese.
Any advice/suggestions greatfully received :)
