I just ordered one and there is some 5% coupon on Fatwallet if you look. I got it for $93.xx shipped. I wasn't really looking for this drive but for under $100.00 why not. Now I gotta go through the whole reformatting process again:)

If you have SATA Ultra baie, you can ghost the old one on the new one (and remove keys in the registry).

I don't have an ultra bay but I have an external SATA 2.5" notebook enclosure. Can I just use Acronis to clone my XP-Ubuntu dual boot setup?

Perhaps. I'am not sure it will work this way. One time, I ghost my T60p drive to a newer on a desktop unit (much more SATA ports) and the new drive did not boot. It tells about missing ntldr or something.

I'll test it out beforehand to make sure it works.
Thanks

Link doesn't work anymore. I think buy.com just realize they've make a mistake. Whoever bought this I just hope buy.com honours it.

Tony,
I don't know if it were a price mistake but the drive I bought already shipped and they only charged me $9x.xx for the drive shipped. This should be here Thursday. I'll be selling a 320gb 5400 rpm Samsung or Western Digital drive in the next few days. Just haven't decided which one I want to keep yet.

Cloning will work if you replace your exisiting drive with your new drive and put your exisiting drive in the enclosure.

muffd, in that case congrats. That's a fantastic price. I just bought a 160gb 7k320 few days ago for about the same price with half the size from zipzoomfly.

Tomshardware puts this drive above the 7k320, and with 5 yrs warranty, it's a winner for sure.

I'm very excited for this drive. I have debated on getting this for the past month now and said I wouldn't get it till it was under $100 which I didn't think would happen for awhile.

It did so I just had to get it and figure I could get decent money for my current hard drive so the upgrade wouldn't really cost me so much afterall.

Brad, for the cloning, do I need to make the partitions the same or will cloning take care of that for me?

If you search for the drive on buy.com, you can still see the drive and the $99 price. They are out of stock, but still appear to be selling them for $99. I just ordered one for $99 delivered - we'll see how long it takes to get to me.

Here's a 5400rpm at Zipzoomfly. Also currently out of stock but a great price after rebate if you can get it.

Thanks runbuh, I'm in. I can always use the space for video work, even though I don't REALLY need it. If they get stock at the price, great, if not, great.

FYI, Buy.com just notified me that they shipped my 320gb 7200rpm drive for $94 shipped. Nice price and Seagate has a good warranty. I don't know if the price was a mistake or just a sale.

I think it was on sale. I can't wait to go to work tomorrow now to get my new drive:)

For you folks who got the $94 order - did you get the "AS", or "ASG" version (last characters of the Seagate part number? The $99 drive I ordered was the "ASG" version ("G" has the free-fall sensor/shock sensor).

I got the AS version.

Thanks. I guess $5 get you the sensor.

I just put an order in. It's backordered, but I can certainly wait.

That'll give me a Core SSD for the OS and 320gb 7200rpm for the virtual machines.

Now to figure out what to do with all my spare harddrives.

Incidentally, the one I ordered shows ASG. What's the difference between AS and ASG?

The G indicates:

G-Force Protection
When a laptop is dropped, the most catastrophic damage to the hard drive occurs when the head scrapes across the surface of the disk, causing potential data loss. G-Force Protection, an optional drop sensor, protects the Momentus 7200.3 drive against shock by sensing when the system is in a free-fall state, moving the heads off the platter and locking them in place—all within three-tenths of a second.

Just got the hard drive. It came OEM but I verified that it has warranty until August of 2013:)

Also, I'm in the process right now of cloning my hard drive that is dual booting XP and Ubuntu. Hopefully this will work. If not, I will be reinstalling everything.

I used Acronis ME last night to move from the 100GB Hitachi to the new 320GB Hitachi. Source drive was internal, destination was external USB, and I booted in to ME from CD. I left the SATA BIOS setting at AHCI, and it worked on the first try. Only one partition on mine, though - XP SP3.

I was going to do it the same way you did it but I think I got too excited and removed the old drive right away and put that one in the enclosure. The new one obviously went into the laptop.

EDIT: Just got done with the cloning and everything works like a charm. Thanks everyone!

I would use Acronis True Image. Acronis products have never let me down. You can mirror your currect drive to the new drive.

320GB 7k2 for under $100. Where do I sign up for two of those?? NICE! I have once of those Ultrabay HDD SATA drive bays, and they work at 1.5GB/s. Currently I have two 200GB Hitachi 7k2's in them. Who makes the 320GB 7k2 ones?

640GB vs. 400GB internally...what a difference that would make!! 8)

I'll be a blue baboon, I thought I found a great deal ordering it yesterday from someone else for $130 shipped.

But as of today, Buy.com shows it unavailable, backordered but accepting orders still at that incredible price.

A blue baboon.

Newegg has the bare Seagate 7200 320gb drive for $109.95 and the Hitachi for $139.95. These 7200 rpm drives take somewhat more power than a 5400 rpm so I went and got the Samsung 5400 rpm 320gb (now $99.95) and I'm very happy with it, it's cool and quiet. mwave.com has the Samsung 500gb 5400 rpm drive for $169.56 with free shipping and that's probably what I'd buy if I were doing it now, though that's a 3 platter drive, so again a little more power consumption.
