(Almost) black screen on TP 600x

Hi all, :(
yesterday my TP 600x stopped displaying in the middle of a soft I have been running for years now.
In fact, it still displays something in background as if contrast and colors were set to minimum. An external screen works ok.
What could have happended?
Eventually, should I try to reinstall the video driver (Neomagic 2562X) and where to find it in that case?
Any ideas, welcome!
Thanks in advance!

Sounds like perhaps your backlight has failed (or possibly the inverter). I have had the backlights fail on a couple of my ThinkPads. The backlight can be replaced, but from my experience attempting it on my T42, I would not recommend it. OTOH, a backlight is cheap if you want to give it a go.

Personally I would try to get a used display lid complete. This is not so hard to replace when you use the Hardware Maintainance Manual as a guide. I have gone this route in the past with a 600E and a T42.

Hi GomJabbar and tnx for your quick reply.
Just one more info, when I try to switch screens with Fn+F7, the LCD lits up for about 1 second and then gets back to dark.
Do you think this confirms your analysis?
Thanks again!

My $0.02,
I would start with the connectors. Unplug and replug them. While you are in there, look for kinks or odd bends where the cable may have failed.
Next would be the inverter. Easy swap. In fact I have a spare and would let it go (with the cable) reasonably cheap.
Last would be the LCD/bulbs.
The HMM for the 600's is really good and easy to follow if you're the slightest bit mechanically inclined.

Word of advice when reinstalling the keyboard...
The cable is tricky when stuffing under the plastic along the LCD base. I use a popcicle stick and gentlywork it under. You'll know it isn't seated right when you have a bump just left of center in the plastic cover...right where the cable is.

I always prefer to get information straight from the horse when I can...
Hardware Maintenance Manual from the Lenovo support site.

Hmmm ... good deal indeed!
Nevertheless, I'll give it a try with my soldering iron !
