Issues with ThinkVantage software after reinstalling WinXP

Hello,

I installed Windows XP from scratch on my X60s and am now having a couple of problems with the ThinkVantages softwares. Mostly probably, because I am missing some of it without knowing it.

1 - I installed the drivers for my Intel wireless card and its obviously working, as I am writing this text now from the machine, but Access Connections greys out all options like "search for a network" and just tells me, that the wifi connection is disabled and asks me if I want to enable it. When I click yes, it does nothing. So how can I get Access Connections to accept the wifi card?

EDIT: I just saw, Lenovo offers 3 different drivers. A dedicated Intel one (thats the one I installed, as I got an Intel card. But there are two more. Is the single Intel driver sufficient in my case?

2 - Standby is greyed out in the options for shutting off. I have the Power Manager and ACPI drivers installed. What else do I need?

3 - Windows constantly asks me on start up, if I want to install an audio bus modem. I installed the Audio drivers already. What is this modem good for and how do I get the drivers?

4 - Fingerprint software is working, I just I cant select anything else in the control center then "Learning Tour". Why?

5 - How can I enable the third button functions in Firefox?

Sorry for asking those rather dumb quesitons, but I am getting really confused by the load of downloads that Lenovo offers for my Thinkpad. And as I am trying to keep every software that is needless for my purposes off board, I need to ask here.

I can only help with #5... go to Control Panel->Mouse->UltraNav->TrackPoint->Settings->"Choose Scrolling"->Settings->"Scrolling Type"->Smooth

Thanks very much, sparta.rising. 5 is solved. Only, the scrolling is a bit rough as I dont have a "scrolling type" - setting.

EDIT: Solved the standby issue myself. I had no video driver installed. Didnt think of it, as the screen was working as always...

Still 3 more to solve.

Check the readme file for Access Connections. It will tell you the other software it requires. Always install Access Connections last. If you have it installed, uninstall it, reboot, then install your other software. Access Connections will only work with Lenovo's version of the wireless drivers.

Did all of this. Still doesnt work.

The WLAN adapter also doesnt show up in the Productivity Center. Only Bluetooth is listed there.

What may I have done wrong? I installed this driver as I suppose this is the right for my Intel WLAN card. Is it?

Now you got me confused. Their documentation doesn't jive. For Access Connections it says:

     ==> Intel Wireless LAN (11abgn, abg, bg) (Windows XP)
         version 12.0.0.75 or higher.
The problem is that there does not seem to be a version 12.0.0.75 driver for the Intel 3945BG Network Card. I believe this is a typo. Have seen errors like this on their site before. :evil:

For the Intel 3945BG card, you should be using Intel driver version: 11.05.0 API. With this driver you also need:

Code: Select all

Access Connections version 4.40 or higher
Power Management Driver for Windows Vista/XP/2000/ME/98 SE version 1.42 or higher
Hotkey Features for Windows 98/98 SE/Me/NT 4.0/2000/XP version 1.24.0603 or higher
Note that the Power Management driver it is referring to is: ACPI Power Management driver version 1.50 (current).

The Hotkey Features driver it is referring to is: (Hotkey Features or Utility or Driver depending on which page you look at) Hotkey version 2.8.2008 (current).

Thanks for the effort, GomJabbar. But as I said, I did even all of this. I deinstalled AC, rebooted. Then reinstalled the Wireless, Hotkey and ACPI driver. Reboot after each single one. And then reinstalled AC again.

Still, neither Productivity Center nor Access Connections are recognising a WLan Connection in my Thinkpad. But then this WLan connection works pretty well for not being there...

Maybe there is a conflict between the Windows Wifi Utility I am using until now and the ThinkVantage software?

Which card do I have? My model is a 1702-HCG.

Also, I believe, that my USB ports dont work on 2.0 level, as Windows keeps complaining about an "high speed external device connected to a slow port".

And, last but not least, a device in the device manager is still missing a driver. It says "unknown device" and as location, it states "Intel(R) 82801GBM (ICH7-M) LPC Interface Controller". I reinstalled the chipset drivers, which I believe should include the drivers for this controller. But it stays the same.

Product Information: ThinkPad X60s 1702-HCG
As I suspected, I believe you have the Intel 3945ABG card. You can verify yourself from this link: Parts lookup.

You also need to install the Windows XP update modules. That should fix your error in Device Manager.
Common Microsoft Windows XP update modules (US only) - ThinkPad R51e, X41 Tablet, X60, X60s, X60 Tablet, T60, T60p, Z60m, Z60t, 3000 C100, N100

If you still have the USB error after installing the above update modules, we might need to look for another fix.

Thanks for your effort, GomJabbar. And thanks for confirming the card.

This update pack is for SP2 (I am running SP3) and it says "US only" (I have a German version of XP). Shall I still install it?

It says you can install each QFE individually. You need QFE 888111 for sure. As far as the other ones, see if they look like something you need. You should be able to uninstall any that give you trouble. QFE888111 is available as a separate download - see the "Drivers and software - ThinkPad X60, X60s" link I provided earlier. I went to Lenovo's site selecting Germany as the country, and I still see the same downloads available, and they still say US only. Not sure what's up with that.

Which build of SP3 RC2 are you using? SP3 RC2 Refresh (build 5508) contains KB888111.

Follow the step of solutions in this thread ( http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/Sho ... &SiteID=17 ). BTW, please use the search function in this forum before posting. Use KB888111 as the word to search, and it should give you many results.

Finally found the time to work on that AccessConnections not seeing my WLAN adapter issue.

Works fine, AccessConnections notices it know. But the next problem is at hand:

AC doesnt see any wireless networks. With the Windows Wireless Manager everything still works (which I put back in charge of managing the WLAN connections after a while of messing around with AC). Any idea or solution for that?

If you haven't already, I would manually disable the Wireless Zero Configuration in your system services panel. AC may not actually do this when it takes control of the connection, and thus be competing for the resource, which is likely to make neither work properly.

The service actually was still enabled, but switiching it off, unticking "let windows control WLAN" and rebooting didnt change anything - AC still doesnt see networks and the "Enable Wireless LAN" - button still does nothing.

Also, some ThinkVantage software changed my logon screen back to the old Win2000 style and I cant change it back to XP style on user accounts. Windows tells me, vrlogon.dll has taken control over that. How can I change it back?

If I'm not mistaken, this has to do with tvt_gina.dll. Here is one thread on this issue.

Thanks alot, GomJabbar. Fixed the logon screen problem.

But AccessConnections still doesnt see any networks.

Also, maybe this is a hint: I am talking about the window, that comes up, when you double click the AC status symbol in the system task row. It always states, that the wireless connection is switched off and does nothing, when I hit the "switch on" button. Only when I go for "search wireless networks", it first states, that the Wifi connection is still switched off, asks me if to turn on. When I state yes, after a while the network connection turns up in the field above with very week signal strength and no connectivity.

Check the following:

Under Locations > Manage Profiles > highlight your wireless profile and select Edit... > Wireless Settings > 5. Advance configuration: Settings... > try
Transmit Power Level: 100%
802.11 Preamble: Short & long
Power save mode: Low (best network performance)
Enable radio management support: (on my system this box is unchecked, but you might try it both ways)

On the main page under Configure > Global Settings... > check that the box is checked "Enable automatic wireless LAN radio control"
