I think I've just killed my external burner :(

I bought it off eBay a couple of weeks ago. It's a Macbook styled (slot load?) Panasonic branded drive (I can't find the exact model number now) It came with two cables, one USB to USB cable (small head to regular read) and one Power to USB cable. When reading discs, the USB to USB cable is enough.
Today I was about to burn some discs but I couldn't find the power cable supplied in the box so I plugged the TP 90W adapter into it (the plug did fit perfectly in the hole or else I wouldn't have tried it) but seconds later I smelled something funny and realized it's from the drive so I disconnected it immediately. (I'm pretty sure I heard a small "click" sound)
But it's too late. Now the drive is dead. The computer can no longer detect it.
What should I do now? Did I only break the electronics or the drive itself too?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Best Regards,
Tony, who is tired and sad now...
