2.5 IDE external Hard drive Issue

#1 Post by Derro » Fri Nov 07, 2008 10:50 am

Hi I am rather new to this but am trying to get data off my 2.5 t40 hard drive.

I started getting unmountable boot volume blue screen and have run chkdsk /r. Each time I run chkdsk I get to either 75 or 50% and it either just stops or says some bad sectors etc.
I have bought a IDE caddy removed the hard drive from the t40 and plugged the drive in to my other laptop which seems to know some thing is plugged in to as it tells me a genric USB drive is attached but I can't see the drive in My Computer and can't get any data off it.
Do I need to set this drive as slave?
Help
Cheers

Hello,
I'm don't believe the master/slave setting is causing the problem. You might try reinserting the drive into the T40 and using the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software, if you haven't done this already. This thread has links to these near the end. It also has a link to the bootable version of PC Doctor to test the drive. You may be able to repair the bad sectors.

You might also try to copy the drive using software like Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost. They can run outside of Windows and may work where Windows can't see the drive. Search the forum if you're unfamiliar with these. Best of luck!
