Portable drive bay 2000 driver won't install. Any clues?

#1 Post by emeu1 » Sat Nov 22, 2008 7:16 pm

Hello,

I have a TP 240X, with a fresh install of Win98SE.
I want to connect a Portable drive bay 2000 (PCMCIA version, not USB, PN:19K4492, FRU:19K4499). to be able to read CD's.
So I downloaded the drivers for it from the Lenovo website (url: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... TFTHR.html).

I followed the instructions for installation, however, Win98SE keeps reporting:

"Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device."

no matter what I try.

I double checked the PN/FRU on the device to be sure I have the "2000" version and not the "non 2000" version of the portable drive bay.
I double checked that the download of the driver was successfull.
I double checked that I followed the instructions step by step.
I double checked that I specified the PCMCIA (and not the USB) driver folder and correct subfolder "win9x" when re-installing the driver.
I disabled the serial port and infrared port (as suggested in the install instructions), rebooted Win98 SE and tried again. Still the same message.
In the unpacked driver folder, I find the following three files:

cnfgeo.vxd
devbay.inf
devbay.mpd

So the .INF file is there.
I can't find anymore information on the Lenovo website.
At this moment I don't know any further.

Has anyone a clue why the Win98 says it can't locate the driver?
Has anyone successfully installed this driver under Win98/Win98SE?
Has anyone a solution for this problem?

Kind regards,

Although the instructions specify to let windows find the driver by itself, have you tried to manually install the driver?
Let windows search - no, I will chose my own driver, have disk - pointing at the directory or folder you unpacked the inf and support files.

Thanks for the tip "zdriver".
I tried it, however, Win98SE still says it can't locate a driver for the device.
I will remove Win98SE and install Win98.
See if that fixes the driver install problem.

Kind regards,

Erik

Unfortunately, that doesn't solve the problem (same message).
"Google-ing" with the message, shows that the message is often displayed in combination with USB devices that are connected.

My portable drive bay 2000 is the PCMCIA version but maybe the software "emulates" the USB version and so I'm looking in the USB driver direction. Do I need or are there USB drivers for the TP 240X for under Win98SE?

Kind regards,

Erik
