Recently upgraded to w2k pro from w98se, and installed MobileMonitor. It's interesting to watch the cpu temp traverse from 40C to 60C and back again, depending on load.

However, MobileMonitor displays cpu freq as 233, not 466 mhz; I understand this is a bug in MobileMonitor. So, I installed Hardware Monitor. It displays "XXXXX" for speed and temp; my old i1400 is not supported. Next I tried intel's fid util. My cpu is not supported by this, either.

System Information now displays "Genuine Intel ~232 MHz." In w98se it was always 466 mhz. What happened? Is there a bug in System Information also? Is cpu throttling occurring? Is the cpu failing? Is MobileMonitor affecting the System Information display?

Don't assume it's broken quite yet. Fisrt, go to IBM's support site and make sure you have all the Windows 2000 drivers installed and the latest BIOS installed on your ThinkPad. Those two things there can not only fix many problems but give a good increase in performance. Next, actually, do this before as well, look at your power settings in Windows, see if clock throttling is enabled. If it is, you can change your power settings there. Usually, the default settings are automatic clock control on battery power and max performance on AC power, but you should check that.

Seems that cpu throttling is not a feature of my system. Additionally, I've already got the latest bios. I'm somewhat reassured by running PC Doctor diagnostics which shows 466 MHz. Also booted Tom's rtbt, which shows 463.67 bogomips (google.)

Actually, there's been no loss of performance. It's running quite well. I'm just very curious about the incorrect display in System Information.

Don't have all the very latest drivers yet; having trouble d/l from ibm site. Must be some issue with firewall (ZoneAlarm) or maybe with AdSubtract. I'm reluctant to disable them even temporarily because they are working so well, but that may be the outcome. I wonder if there is any other site to d/l from.

I just had a similar poblem today. I was using my 760E at my desk and I opened the diagnostic utility, and guess what the thing said, nope, not 120mhz, it said 9.75mhz, 9mhz and 3 quarters of a megahert. I was able to fix that though by seting the computer to disable clock throttling when running off of the AC power.

Update:

Ran dxdiag after d/l 9.0c, and the system tab displayed "Processor: Intel Celeron processor, ~460MHz." Cool. Ran dxdiag again, and it said "~50MHz." What the?

Either A, the software is having trouble with the hardware and/or B, you are running off the battery because most ThinkPads increase and decrease CPU clock while runing off battery according to your usage and/or C, you computer is going through that time of the month again. I'm going to put my money on a and c. When running newer software on an older system, there will be some trouble communicating between software and hardware.
