USB HDD adapter ???

I am using Apricorn's Drivewire USB Hard Disk Drive adapter.

Even though my Thinkpad T30 uses USB 1.1, the adapter works just fine with

Seagate ST310212A - Ultra ATA
Western Digital WD400a1 - Enhanced IDE
Western Digital WDAC26400 - Enhanced IDE

However...

Even though I receive the typical new USB Hardware found message, MS Windows Explorer does not display drive letters with

Western Digital WDAC2700 - AT Compatible Intelligent Drive
Western Digital WDAC2540 - AT Compatible Intelligent Drive

Is there a problem with my Apricorn adapter? Is anyone else able to use their USB HDD adapter with older smaller (like my 730 MB and 540 MB) drives?

Those hard disks are almost prehistoric!
Their interface may not be compatible with a USB adapter.
I would suggest to give them away and get something more modern.

Older drives require more power to spin-up. If the USB adapter is powering external drive only via one USB cable it's probably not enough for older drives.
