CF vs HD

I've been reading how people use CF for the storage in their 240x and etc. Isn't CF slower than HD?

What's the advantages and disadvantages?

Anyone has any idea?
240x, 500Mhz 192mb
390x, 300Mhz 128mb, bad kb.
600x, 500Mhz 256mb
i1400 2621 433Mhz 256mb
770x, 300Mhz 128mb
