R&R error...is there a fix

#1 Post by xwray » Wed Jan 14, 2009 7:06 pm

I am running XP SP3 on an X200 with R&R 4.

Ever since I received the laptop it has coughed up error 1517 upon shutdown as viewed in the event log:

Windows saved user xxxxxxxxx registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

Call me anal but this kind of thing irritates me and I would like to make the errors go away even if they don't really signify that there is anything really "wrong" with the system. As best as I can determine from reading various bits of info on the internet this error is being caused by R&R.

Do all thinkpads running R&R do this or might it just be due to the way some systems are set up?

Is there a fix?

thanks for any help

I tried doing a search for 1517 on Lenovo's support pages and no results were found. Try it yourself so it can detect your machine's type and model.
Sorry ... that is all I can suggest at present. :(

thanks....1517 is not a Lenovo R&R code but rather a windows error code. In this case it indicates a program (R&R) does not properly release the system handles it uses when running and the problem causes the user profile not to be unloaded properly on shutdown. This results in a slower than normal shutdown amongst other possible issues although I have not noticeded anything other than the slower shutdown...I just don't like seeing error messages in the event log.

xwray, It could be a simple windows registry problem ... if there is such a thing. Unfortunately, IMO, windows has not really handled the registry side of things for years. There fore the registry gets itself into a right muddle. One of the best solutions I have found is 'TuneUp Utilities'. They have a free trial version with full functionality for several days. It might be worth using TuneUp Utilities to delete the unwanted registry entries before going much further.
BTW, I have no association with the firm but I like their product so much that I pay for it.
