DVD burner issue or software issue

Hi,
The DVD burner in my T43 (the Panasonic one) now refuses to burn discs but it has no problem to read them. It says burning starting failure soon after starting a burning process. I use Nero 6 and it's the only DVD writing software I have.
I wonder what would be the best way to determine whether it's a hardware or software issue.
Thanks!
Best Regards,
Tony

You can try the following to rule out registry errors (happened to me once).
Microsoft wrote:This method provides step-by-step instructions for how to use Registry Editor to delete the following corrupted Registry entries:
* UpperFilters
* LowerFilters

Don't know if this would help, but I usually try different software before editing the registry in order to diagnose whether something is a hardware or software program. There's plenty of very powerful free CD burning software out there; I prefer ImgBurn myself, available here:

How about using a different batch/brand of media?

Run the (latest) NeroInfo tool

It will tell you what your drive is capable of.
All other suggestions should be tried as well.
