Western Digital WD1600BEVE vs. Seagate ST9160821A

#1 Post by bosco » Sun Feb 01, 2009 7:43 am

I'm looking to buy one of these hard drives for my T43 (I'm aware of the 2010 error).

Western Digital WD1600BEVE 160gb 5,400rpm PATA
Seagate ST9160821A 160gb 5,400rpm PATA

Both are at Newegg for $64.99/free shipping.

Does anyone have any experience with both of these drives? Any opinions?

I've always bought Seagate for my desktops and have only had one fail over many years. My only experience with Western Digital is the 40gb drive I had in my 600E which served me well.

They both have mixed reviews at Newegg, but mostly positive. I found a couple website reviews that show the Seagate having slightly better performance than the WD, but I'm a little concerned about Seagate's new perpendicular recording method and the the ST9168021A being the first drive of that type. Is this technology still too new or have they worked out the kinks. However, I've also read about WD's clicking noises.

Seagate, of course, has the 5 year warranty versus WD's 3 year warranty.

Should I just go with Seagate since they have the better warranty? It seems that all other things are equal.

It's these small decisions in life that are the hardest. :)

I just bought that same Western Digital drive for my T42 about 3 weeks ago from Micro Center for $75. Installed Windows 7 beta on it. No problems or complaints yet!
