Might be one of several things. First of all, make certain that the drive is plugged into the connector properly on the ThinkPad. On my T42, it is best to hold it upside-down while pushing the drive into the slot.

Also, all hard drives should be partitioned and formatted on the computer they will be used with. Otherwise you can run into drive geometry errors.

Some older motherboards need a BIOS update or drive overlay software to support hard drives larger than 32GB.

I think I may have misread what you were trying to do. I thought you wanted to boot the new drive.

If you just want to use the new drive for external storage, you still might run into the 32MB BIOS limitation - not sure.

You probably need external power to the USB hard drive. Your PC may be able to power it directly, but your ThinkPad probably cannot. I assume your ThinkPad USB port works with other hardware? What is the storage capacity of your USB hard drive?
