My x40 overvolted my SSD. Plastic is melting. What to do?
I put my samsung ssd into my x40 but it was not that good of a partnership. First, my x40 did not like it just as pure as the samsung ssd was (no converter used). Second, my samsung ssd melt. Third, samsung ssd's memory chips are somewhat melting, there's something black looking like black plastic melting around this chips.
As a conclusion, my initial thoughts were that this partnership was not meant for life and I put this ssd back to my computer where it was happy all the time and where it is working now fine.
I am asking myself what will happen soon. Will the short-term overvolting will have a long-term effect? Should I use it anymore? What would you do?

Overvolting is pretty bad, I'm surprised it survived. It's lifetime has definitely been reduced by some unknown amount.
I'd try to figure out what was causing the overvoltage. I assume it's the usual 3.3v-5v issue found in the X4 series, look for the threads here on making adapters for other 1.8 drives.

I am surprised, too. I am not willing to use it as my main drive anymore. That's really a pity as it is that fast - it's nearly the same speed as ssd drive from x301. It was the usual 3.3 to 5 volt issue. Just thinking if after overvolting the drives do keep damages and how much lifetime will be influenced by overvolting. What would you do with this drive? Keep it and use it or throw it away?aaa wrote:Overvolting is pretty bad, I'm surprised it survived. It's lifetime has definitely been reduced by some unknown amount.

Don't throw it away. You can't predict how damaged it got, if you're lucky it'll keep running for years. Just run a normal disk check, then hope it lasts.

Vistas HDD Error-checking says everything is fine. Hope it will run fine for the next years.
