Easeus Partition Master an alternative to Acronis True Image

I have been a long time user of Acronis having purchased two licences and a number of upgrades over the years. During this period I have used it with good success for backups / clones and succesfull restores.

However, I recently had two instances where the latest version 11 + updates gave me problems. The first was two months ago where I backed up a smaller SATA drive to a larger SATA drive but then the larger drive refused to boot. Tried the operation twice but each time same result. I emailed Acronis but I did not hear back (they eventually replied 6 weeks later - honest!)
At the time I searched the internet and came across the Easeus website and they had two free tools - Diskcopy and Partition Master. I cloned the drive with the Partition Master and it worked great!

Yesterday I tried to clone up my 160GB SATA drive (with only 16gb + the Recovery Partition) using Acronis and this time it refused to even start the clone process - claimed I had disk errors. I ran the Windows disk checker and the Lenovo tool as well - both tools reported both drives error free.

So, once again I installed the Easeus Partition Master again and gave it a try - worked first time! Allowed me to resize the partitions to allow for the smaller target drive and copied the Recovery Partition too. OK I have not tested the Recovery partition but the main partition looks fine.

Partition master does not allow creation of the backup files (i.e. .tib files) but for cloning it seems to work great!

From reading the comments, this program should be handled carefully, it's not quite what it seems.

Some other valuable info someone left for others (post # 25):
found a auto updater within the registry for this program. It can be disabled by going into the registry editor and deleting the appropriate keys called AutoUpdate.

You’ll find the key twice……. in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER software hive and also in the HKEY_USERS S-1-5-21-….. software hive. Deleting these two entries should stop the message appearing without affecting the running of the program. Very useful if you’re or someone in your family are in the habit of accidentally clicking on such messages when they pop up.
If you allow the program to be updated you lose the full version licence.

I would highly recommend you create a restore point before editing your registry though. You can also export the keys you delete (before you delete them) to your documents folder just in case you want to reinstall the keys.

As mentioned in my OP this copies the recovery partition too - which AFAIK is a hidden partition.

Hi,

I have just used it to copy a HD. The hidden partition on the original drive is now shown. You can always hide it afterwards i guess.

This is my first attempt at cloning and iit was surprisingly easy. Put the new drive in an external caddy, start the Easeus software, click copy. Once done (2 hrs later) swap them over and thats it.
