Fingerprint logon no longer works (T43)

After a "registry inflicted incident" and a restore of system and program partitions, CSS 6 and Fingerprint 4.x (4.8?) seem to have lost the ability to login with the fingerprint reader (FPR). The fingerprint security app, under "Logon," states to open CSS, click the Advanced menu, and click logon preferences ... but I get an error, "Unable to load PE logon data" or words very close to that.
Trying to uninstall R&R/CSS from Add/Remove Programs (APPWIZ.CPL), an error comes up, "A newer version of this application is installed, remove this application first using the 'Add/Remove Programs' control panel." Hmph.
My only idea is to install a newer version of CSS over it and hope that works ... I'm reticent to do that if anyone's discovered a different troubleshooting tactic.
