"Tp fan control" is only for -40 thinkpads. Is there an equivalent for the newer -60s ? (I can't say x60...) Or is there some other way to control the fan?

Sure. It works with 60s without problem. Check the ThinkPad utility area.

Wha? I did but the sourceforge page says "Solution to the cooling fan noise annoyances Thinkpad T4x (T40/T41/T42/T43) notebook series. "
I had searched the forum and didn't see any mention of it working on 60s... different chipset, seemed a bit risky to just try it. Worth a shot though, right? (<-- famous last words.)

I successfully run TPFan control on a R50p, R52, and three different T60s, all with zero problems. This includes XP, Vista, Windows 7 beta and Windows Server 2008. One of my T60 units is 64 bit capable and TPFan control works well on 64 bit Vista and 64 bit Server 2008.
The fans will kick in when necessary under heavy load (adjusted by the TPFan control .ini file to suit your needs) but the terribly annoying fan sound is mostly supressed.
