What does thinkpad models T, R, A, G... etc stand for?

BTW... what do types stand for? (2373-QK5..etc) ??

A stood for All-in-one is discontinued.
R for Reduced Price
T for Thin and Light
X for eXtra small (i think)
G don't know, is a Desktop Replacement new (successor of A)

thanks for answering my little trivia thats been bugging me for weeks. now i know that my r51 is really for those who are on the down side of the budget. hahaha....

In no way is the g a replacement for the a... the g is so much heavier, and is less feature filled for its time. the r is close to the replacement for the a. The g is a cheap thats all there is to it.

well r is a the heavier cousin of the t at a lower price so i guess that makes sense

The R series isn't that heavy(and I don't really care about weight or thikness) and the G series is a great ThinkPad so don't say that its cheap(The G series is a ThinkPad too).The G series is a more of a (alternative)desktop replacement.(I have used a G40 at my school).

I think the G was supposed to stand for Junk, but when they named it in Japan they mistranslated it!

Looks like without the G series, the A, R, T and X together stand for XTRA Thinkpads...

The G series is fine for what it is, a transportable desktop replacement. Sure, it's big and clunky, but the people who buy them aren't bringing them to work everyday.

Sure, but I don't understand why they made the G40 with Intel Integrated Graphics, the better Desktop Replacements are from Toshiba in my opinion.

Yea, I repaired a 3Ghz G40 and a 1.4Ghz A31 and sold the G40 to keep the year or more older A31.

Why? The A31 had better(same res) screen IMO, 2 speakers instead of one tinny one, 2 ultrabays not one, and non-integrated video. IMO the only thing the G40 had going for it IMO was USB 2 ports...

I used a G40 at my school. I also helped my school setup and configure the G40's that they have. They also have R40's(for the teachers) and 3 R50's and I got to set them all up and configure them. (The G40's are the student computers.)

and what do you think about them??? build quality?? keyboard??? features??? required fork truck to move???

The G40? Nice computer of course, it is a ThinkPad. Solid, large keyboard with huge palmrest, it does have a desktop cpu and the accompanying fan and heatsink, and so is wedge shaped. Floppy drive was permanentlly built in(weird).

Didn't have the extra touches like the Thinklight. Low volume from the internal speaker, barely adequate for watching a DVD without headphones. Good size battery w/OK life.

But carrying it around was like carrying my bowling bag/ball. Seriously!

What I think about the G40? I think that its a great PC and ThinkPad. Its feels solid like the other ThinkPad's, the keyboard feels comfortable, its a bit heavy but I handled the weight. I delivered the G40's to the classrooms(3 for each class)using a little cart and I also carried 3 G40's (using the stairs because I couldn't use the cart to get to that classroom) and delivered to the classroom. To me, it also looks like the T series a bit except that the G series is bigger. It also performs good and the battery life is good. Its also missing some ThinkVantage technologies that the other ThinkPad series have.

But carrying it around was like carrying my bowling bag/ball. Seriously!

About complaints about the G series weighing alot, I used to carry an old 760ED around with me everywhere I go. Until everyone else does the same, noone has a right to call a modern laptop heavy, unless of course you are a 770 or 765 series owner. The case with the 760ED and accesories/tools I used weighed in at almost 20 pounds on bad days, 10 on good and 12 on average. The laptop itself weighed 7 or 8 pounds. Do enough walking around with the sucker, you'll have a good workout routine without even having to go out of your way for excercize.

Well, anyways, with that out of my system, G series really was never meant to be toted around on a daily basis, it was designed for someone who was on a budet but wanted to have the option of carrying their computer with them if they wanted to. For people on a budget needing battery life and light weight, the R series is a wiser choice.

If cost is no object and you are concerned about your weight, the obvious choice is an X or a T series.

Not one ThinkPad line is better than the other, you just have to figure out which one best caters to your needs.

ROTFL! You had to use a cart to move them??? Doesn't that say all! Ha ha ha! I'm glad I have a T42...

Next year, my schools going to being giving all the students laptops, but luckily, they are light enough to not need a cart. Were getting iBooks, really thin, exceptionally light, durable plastic exterior, yup, the ultimate frisbees. They should fly better than them AOL cd's that I'm always getting, which despite popular opinion, still don't fly as well as those CompuServe flopies I used to get did.

Better yet, 20 years ago, instead of X and T laptops, it was XT desktops.

When I found out that my school was going to get laptops, they where deciding whether to get IBM ThinkPad's or Apple laptops, but then they decided to get ThinkPad's.(I was hoping that they where going to get ThinkPad's). I was very excited when I heard that we where going to get ThinkPad's.

Also, I helped out with all of those G40's and the other ThinkPad's all by myself (and i'm only 14).

all i know is that the A series were built like tAnks.
much sturdier than the x40 i have now
