Warranty Tags, COA, etc... can I????

#1 Post by defor » Mon Apr 27, 2009 12:57 pm

Basically, the x200 refurb that arrived from lenovo last week is the first non-pre-owned/rebuilt thinkpad I've owned, and it's going to end up being my primary commuter laptop...

While on used/out of warrany systems that I use heavily, I happen to remove the stickers on the bottom/top (I personally find them ugly), pretty much without consequence, I realize this is a system that has a year of warranty, (and I might extend it down the road), How does lenovo feel about removal of these stickers, serial, refurb sticker, refurb tag, etc...?

The COA I realize they could care less, and frankly, Home Basic is more of a badge of dishonor than anything else ;)

Now, I'm not a thinkpad purist, and while I love the look and feel of the systems, I'm a firm believer that factory stickers are NOT part of the laptop itself.

The other option is that I could relocate the serial numbers to the inside of the ram panel and be happy with this...

Thoughts, or should I call Lenovo on this?

It's your machine , so do what you want to do. I don't think Lenovo cares about stickers either, but personally I would leave the machine type/model/serial # sticker on it...just because. Plus the COA would add value on resale.

I would agree with Harry as far as value if you ever resold them. The stickers on the bottom may be ugly, but I hardly ever see them -- I never turn the lapyop upside down when using it. As a potential buyer I would tend, I'm afraid, to be a little paranoid about them missing, especially if a seller said "Don't worry, I've got a pile of 'em here, grab all you want!" ;->

My worry would mostly be is that I'm getting either a stolen machine, or an unacknowledged FrankenPad that has who-knows-what on the inside. Are these concerns unwarranted? Probably. I'm just relaying how I would feel approaching this machine blind, as a total stranger.

On the other hand, I would also tend not to view these as a negative from a member of this forum in the Marketplace here -- I trust our fellow members infinitely more than some yahoo on eBay!

LOL Mike, and thanks all fo th einput- I think I'm going to call lenovo themselves today and see what they say given a few hypothetical situations...

Indeed, I've always been wary of buying used systems without proper serial tags, matching with the board, etc etc...

On the upside, I can't really see this system NOT lasting me a long number of years (which is a surprise for pc laptops and myself, but it's also the first new one I've had in a while)

On the other hand, I was a graphic design major who has a passion for doing (in my opinion) tasteful and functional mods to my laptops in the past, and this system is no exception, to some extent I just need to find out at what point will Lenovo stop accepting my system :)

chatted with 3 people from lenovo today on just this issue.

As long as the board still retains the serial number in bios, no tags have to be present on the system to receive service, but, as is often the case, in the event of a board failure, you'll need the serial recorded somewhere when submitting the trouble ticket. other than that, basically I was told that the stickers only truley exist as a reference to the customer.

Thanks for the responses... I totally agree with the resale point, but if, in 3-4 years, that becomes an issue, i'll cross that bridge when i get to it.
Personally for the prices the outlet has been selling at recently, it's hard to even be concerned about a resale issue, at least for a high-usage commute laptop!

I've always liked the "clean look" of no stickers. Specifically the ones that come on the palm rest, it's the first ones I remove. I already know it's "Intel Inside" and that "Microsoft made the OS."

Then quite frankly the only reason I remove the ones on the bottom...all of them... is because I cannot read or write...ha...ha...ha...

OK I'll get serious for a moment and say thanks to the OP for this topic as I've found it quite interesting.

Oh... and me? Yes... dull and boring I know, but I leave the ones on the bottom alone. After all, even though the thought of selling one of my "babies" is dreadful, I do like them to be all original.

Cheers...
