Wireless Always On After Startup
Wireless Always On After Startup
Hello all,
I have recently downloaded xPUD (fast booting linux software) as an "instant-on" type dual boot set up. However, because it loads up just after the initial Lenovo welcome screen, it seems that my green wireless indicator has yet to light up (indicating my wireless card is working).
Thus, once I load into xPUD and try to find a wireless network, it says it can't find my wireless card (understandable because the green light is off?)....anyway, is there some sort of BIOS setting that needs to be changed so the wireless card is turned on immediately after I turn on my computer??
Thanks for your help,
If your interested, check out xPUD: http://download.xpud.org/devel/xpud-05032009.exe it has great potential if the wireless issue can be resolved
Thanks
T

Re: Wireless Always On After Startup
Well, there are a couple of issues here. Many Linux distros do not include the propriatary firmware needed to operate the wireless card. You have to install the firmware drivers or use an open source driver for the wireless adapter to work. Ndiswrapper with Windows XP drivers usually works pretty well.
Once you get the wireless adapter working, you can set it up to automatically connect at bootup (at least in Mandriva Linux).
Sometimes you need to issue a command to turn the wireless adapter on. Sometimes you can turn it on in Windows, reboot, then it will be on in Linux. I have not needed to do this with my Intel 2200BG adapter. Also, some laptops have a wireless hardware switch that must be turned on.

Thanks for the reply.
I will look into the firmware needed for my wireless card...is 'Ndiswrapper' compatible with Vista?
In addition, the hardware switch is always on.
Thanks,
T

Re: Wireless Always On After Startup
So I looked through the build file of xPUD, and they have included my wireless card in the firmware set as part of the system.
However, I think I still need to 'turn it on' directly after boot...BIOS setting change? Device Manager change?
Thanks for the help so far,
T

Re: Wireless Always On After Startup
I think that´s rather a thread for the Linux forum. What model is your wifi card? What is with iwconfig or ifconfig or ifup/down? In windows one can turn on/off the wireless, same goes for Linux. I don´t think there is much into turning on/off the wifi before the OS has even started loading. My guess is that in xPUD the wifi starts per default turned off as a boot-time-cutting measure.

Re: Wireless Always On After Startup
The wireless card is: Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN.
Within in xPUD, there is the gnome editor, so I guess I could try to run iwconfig or ifconfig to see if that turns on the card
