looking for thinkpad with a good screen i.e. flexview / ips

#1 Post by voirin » Sun May 10, 2009 3:57 am

Hi, I recently purchased a T61p only to sell it on ebay a while ago. My main gripe was simply related to the panel quality. With shocking viewing angles and a lack of brightness, i had to get rid of it. I was very very disappointed.

My question is which thinkpads come with a decent panel? Does anyone have a list? I heard the T60p came with a flexview screen, and some of the X series tablets come with ips? Isnt there some web resource that has a compiled list of panels used in each series of past and present thinkpads? That is what I will be basing my next purchase from.

Any help most appreciated.

Cheers,
Voirin

Which T61p did you get? The WSGXA+ panel and the IPS screens have the same brightness, 200 nits. I thought the WSXGA+ screen was a decent panel, not the IPS, but still pretty good. I think the WUXGA is a little dimmer. If it was the 14" P model, then yes it is a lot dimmer. My 14" R60 has the BOE-Hydis panel, which is supposed to be the best of the SXGA+ screens. It's fairly decent on the upper levels, but almost unusable on the lower levels, even in a dark room. The viewing angles on it are pretty thin, but it's acceptable straight on. Any 15" 4:3 screened T60, p or non-p, with SXGA+ or UXGA resolution is an IPS screen. Good luck in the quest. It's worth the trouble in my opinion.

In addition to what Fred said, the tablets (X61 Tablet, X200 Tablet) are also IPS (all of them). The X60 Tablets apparently had a few very small batches of units with TN panel (manufactured during the time when there was a great shortage of IPS screens).
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

Thanks for the responses. The T61p used a 1920x1200 (WUXGA) panel. I thought I could live with it, but it was that bad. I had a better time using my 600E, which has a nice bright screen. I might consider purchasing an old 4:3 format like a T60p or a T4x. But I like something portable so maybe an X61 or X200.

cheers, V
