Drive letter assignment???

#1 Post by robert213 » Fri Jun 19, 2009 3:33 pm

I have a T30 running Windows XP Pro. I have reloaded Windows from Recovery CD(s) and used Norton's Partition Magic to create logical partition 5 or 6 times now.

On all previous attempts, Windows Explorer
IBM_PRELOAD (C:)
Local Disk (D:) - The logical partition that I created
DVD/CD-RW Drive (E:)

On my last attempt, I get
IBM_PRELOAD (C:)
DVD/CD-RW Drive (D:)
Local Disk (E:) - The logical partition that I created

Any ideas what would've caused DVD/CD drive to jump ahead of logical partition?

Don't know why it happened, But easy fix. Reassign cd-rw to letter x, change e to d, change x to e.

You're also using the rather unreliable Norton PM. This program was great when it still belonged to Powerquest.
Since Norton (read Symantec) took it over, it's turned into crap.
The same happened to Drive Image and any other programs that Symantec "buys up".
I wouldn't touch their junk with a 10-foot barge pole!

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management. Once there, right-click on the CD-ROM 0 box and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths...". That will open up another window where you can click on a Change button and assign a new drive letter for the optical drive. You will get a warning that some programs may not run once you alter the drive letter (the registry would have saved the D: drive as being the source of the optical drive. You should also be able to change the logical partition E: drive the same way; right-clicking the "Disk 1" (i.e., "E" drive) box.

edit: Alternative method to get to Disk Management -- Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop and select Manage.

Or the shortest way to get straight there:

Start -> Run -> diskmgmt.msc

Acronis Disk Director
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/pr ... oning.html
However, it doesn't seem to be very stable, and not work with XP64 and Vista.

A better bet would be Gparted Live CD http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
or Parted Magic (based on above Gparted) http://partedmagic.com/
