BIOS Flashing

If all I have is a .wph file, can I just use WinPLASH to flash the BIOS?

This thread at Lenovo Forums seems to indicate that it is possible:

However, my question would be why would you want to use that program as opposed to the method already provided by IBM/Lenovo?
