Freeze during bios update of T61 laptop

I just ran ThinkVantage SystemUpdate. Eventually, this asked me to upgrade the bios. I said OK.
It gave me very stern warnings not to interrupt the application before it completed.
Then it said:
Load new BIOS (done)
Analyze ... BIOS compatibility (done)
Read old BIOS (done)
Save old BIOS (done)
Flash new BIOS (working)
Flash new Bios...
And then laptop froze. It does not respond to mouse or keyboard, and no changes appear visually on the screen.
This was about an hour ago.
Any suggestions on what to next?
How long to wait before giving up and forcing a reboot?
How to reboot in the most safe way?
Thanks
Andy
Any idea what to do about this?
