anyway. I was wondering if the R52 caddies are very specific or could I use another model types caddy to fit in the R52?

If it fits physically it will work. Just make sure the hard drive's circuit board is isolated from the metal caddy bottom by using a plastic or even paper insulator cut to size.emeraldgirl08 wrote:Hope I spelt that right?

Re: R52 caddies
What I meant is I'm expecting an R52 this week. It is barebones and doesn't have the caddy or HDD cover with it. Could I use one from a T40's series??? Or any other Thinkpad for that matter?
I have a caddy ordered but need a cover.

Okay ordered one from Fleabay.
All I need now is an HDD, battery, and DVD drive.

Re: R52 caddies
You made a good choice, especially if it's one with Intel GPU (and 15" SXGA+ IPS).
Remember you will get the 2010 Error on the hard disk, unless you find an approved one, or one that has been known to also work without error.
Check the T4x forum sticky on T43 drives.
Or live with it for ca. 3-5 seconds at bootup, it'll go automatically away if you set BIOS to bypass the error.
Please note that HDD covers are different between 14" and 15" models.
Covers from other series don't fit.

Re: R52 caddies
The company I bought this from are resellers. I'm assuming it's off-corporate lease. Since I live in a rural area it took some arm-bending to get them to ship it to my Post Office Box
The model is an 1860. Screen-size is 14". I'm not sure about the last three digits of model type. The guy who I spoke with said it was packed and didn't want to open it back up. It was also all set to be shipped out via USPS so I should get it by Friday

Were there any R52 models factory-equipped with a FlexView LCD?RealBlackStuff wrote:You made a good choice, especially if it's one with Intel GPU (and 15" SXGA+ IPS).

Tawbook and many knowledgeable people around here do not believe so.

Re: R52 caddies
I haven't seen what a flexview screen looks like!
I imagine it's a very bright screen and doesn't require looking for a sweet spot???
If mine doesn't have one would I be able to install one myself???

Re: R52 caddies
For all 15" SXGA+ LCD R52s, the LTWBOOK lists them as 15.0" (381.0mm) SXGA+ (1400x1050) TFT color / Active Matrix / 200 nits. If they were IPS Flexview LCD's, it would specifically say "FlexView display with wide viewing angle and high density using in plane switching (IPS) technology". If you look at the ATI GPU SXGA+ R51 models (.e.g 1830-9QU) it does specifically state that. In fact none of the 15" R52 models, even those with ATI GPU's are mentioned as having IPS Flexview LCD's.

Re: R52 caddies
Someone must've flipped that LCD in RBS's R52 since even XP identifies it as a FlexView...

Re: R52 caddies
George, RBS, it would be interesting from a general knowledge perspective if the FRU# printed on the back of that LCD were to be compared to the original shipped parts list. In fact it would be interesting to see the original parts list as far as the LCD part#. The IBM/Lenovo reference books have been known to be incorrect in the past, as you are aware.

Re: R52 caddies
The original P/N was 92P6710, FRU 92P6711.
What's in there now is LG Philips LP150E07 (TL) (02), P/N 13N7085, FRU 13N7086, which has S-IPS technology AFAIK.
George has seen this machine and confirmed to me that it was an IPS screen.
He also saw it identified in the installed XP-Pro/SP3 as a Flexview screen.

Re: R52 caddies
RBS, thanks. So since your LCD was swapped with IPS one, it stands to reason that the LTWBOOK is most likely correct.. no IPS Flexview screens went into R15" R52's at the factory.
