Power supply for T500

#1 Post by Sean123 » Sat Jul 18, 2009 8:55 am

Just a question about power supplies. I have an old power supply from my old idea pad, It is 65W and 20V. But the ones sent with my new thinkpad is 90W and 20V. The 65 works fine and charges the thinkpad. But does anyone know if it will do damage to the battery or cause other harm? Or am I good to use it?

You can use it with no problem. The only downside I can think of is that fully charging your battery may take longer.

Lenovo tends to ship integrated GPU models with the 65W supply, and dedicated GPU models with the 90W supply, just to be safe. In practice, I find it almost impossible that the laptop will ever pull more than 65W, but I guess Lenovo foresees such a possibility.

The only way I can think you can get that is on max brightness, max CPU/GPU stress and a couple of devices plugged into the USB ports, while charging the battery. A highly unlikely scenario even then.

One thing you shouldn't use the 65W PSU though, is with the mini-dock/dock. For starts, it appears that there will be no power to the USB ports, if you do.

Under the title "Tips for a maximal battery life", Power Manager's help system says:
"Make sure that you use the correct AC adapter for your ThinkPad model. If you use the wrong AC adapter, the battery can not be charged fully and the battery gauge might not show the actual charge level."
Based on this, i suggest that you don't use the 65W AC adapter with your T500.
